What is Professional Teeth Whitening?

Professional teeth whitening is normally a safe and effective method of removing stains and lightening the colour of your teeth.

As we age, our teeth encounter more food and substances that are likely to stain our smile. Our tooth enamel naturally attracts particles, and products such as tea, coffee, berries and tobacco are well-known culprits for staining teeth.

Bleaching agents contained in teeth whitening solutions are designed to reverse the effects aging and staining can leave behind, lightening the colour of your teeth.

How Teeth Whitening Works

Peroxide-based teeth whitening agents are widely used. As the active ingredient breaks down, oxygen acts on the tooth enamel, creating the whitening effect.

ZOOM!® In-Office Teeth Whitening in Etobicoke

You can get in-office teeth whitening done in about two hours at our dental clinic. At Cloverdale Dental Group, we use ZOOM! professional in-office whitening.  To start, a barrier is applied around your gums to protect them before a thin layer of gel is applied and chemically activated on each tooth. We duplicate this process a few times until the desired shade of white is achieved.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening in Etobicoke

We offer at-home teeth whitening options so that you can whiten your teeth conveniently at home. Custom whitening trays will be created to fit your smile, and your dentist will also provide you with detailed at-home instructions to follow during your course of treatment.

Teeth Whitening FAQs

Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions about teeth whitening at Cloverdale Dental Group

  • How long do the effects of teeth whitening last?

Teeth whitening is a temporary solution to whiten your smile.

If your teeth are continually exposed to foods that are known to cause staining, you will probably begin to see their whiteness fade after a few months.

If you avoid foods and drinks following your teeth whitening treatment, you may only need a touchup after a year or so.

  • Does teeth whitening make teeth more sensitive?

Sensitivity is a short-term side effect of teeth whitening you may notice. For most patients, this fades within a few days following a whitening session.

To minimize the risk of any discomfort, we recommend using an anti-sensitivity toothpaste before your treatment and for at least two weeks following your treatment.

  • Do teeth whitening products work on all stains?

We have found that yellow and brown-coloured stains respond best to teeth whitening treatments.

Grey, blue and purple-shaded stains tend not to respond to whitening at all. For teeth with these types of stains, veneers or dental crowns may be a better fit when it comes to cosmetic treatments.

  • Does teeth whitening work on dental restorations?

No, teeth whitening is only effective on natural teeth. It does not work on existing dental restorations such as veneers or dental crowns.

If veneers or crowns are a component of your treatment plan, you should whiten your teeth before receiving your dental restorations.

  • Will teeth whitening damage my tooth enamel?

If a qualified dentist is supervising your teeth whitening process, it's very unlikely to damage your dental enamel.

We recommend patients always consult with a dentist to ensure they are using any teeth whitening products safely.

  • Does insurance cover the cost of teeth whitening?

Dental insurance does not typically cover the cost of teeth whitening because it is a purely cosmetic procedure with no health benefits for your teeth.
